Book Festival Series: Book Expo America

Most self-publishers sell book exhibit services,

Most self-publishers sell book exhibit services, one which is the prestigious, Book Expo America.

Book Expo America is being sold like it is a self-published author's ticket to getting picked up by a traditional publisher, agent, bookstore owners and even TV and film producers.

The Truth:
In contrary to the sales pitch you hear about Book Expo, agents, rights buyers and traditional publisher representatives do not go to self-publishers booths to look and inquire for books to acquire.

Book Expo is an event for publishers/sellers/marketers. Agents are busy networking with editors, publicists, established authors, traditional publishing houses, bookstores, marketers, book packagers, retailers, etc.

During this time, they are managing their own authors and events. Agents are not looking to sign new clients/authors unless it comes via a strong personal recommendation.

Attending would be a great learning experience, but approaching agents would be a no-no.

BookCon is far more accessible. Attend and have fun and learn, but, again, don't expect to connect with an agent. It's not that kind of conference.
